A Night Out to Remember: Is Live Music Truly Favored More Than Sex?

Picture having a night off. You are energized, ready for adventure, and wanting to break from your typical schedule of post-work slumping. Your options offers possibilities! Could you prefer a) going to a gig or b) engaging in intimacy? The outcome, as frequently seen with these types of queries, is obviously: “It depends.” Reasonable people may reasonably wonder: what kind of the show? Who is the companion? Will it be expected to be enjoyable?

Not many would select a heavy metal lineup if the other option was a magical night with Jonathan Bailey. But adjust either end of the scenario, and it grows less obvious. Regarding the thousands surveyed presented with this choice by a live event company, no additional context was given – and the answer was revealed unambiguously and overwhelmingly supporting gigs.

Survey Results Reveal Surprising Choices

A global report, interviewing 40,000 people from 18 and 54 from 15 markets, revealed that live music are now the most popular leisure activity, ranking above games, films and – indeed – sexual intercourse. Given the choice to a single form of entertainment forever, 39% of respondents selected concerts, versus film attendance (17%) and games (14%). They were also over two times as inclined to choose seeing their favourite artist on stage (70%) rather than intimacy (30%).

Context and Considerations

Naturally it makes sense that a PR survey commissioned by a gig organizer might conclude so heavily supporting gigs – and, amid the playful mood of a either-or question, if your top performer is, for example a legendary singer, you can see why seeing him could prevail rather than a ordinary encounter. However this two-option scenario between concerts or sex, clearly absurd though it may be, is fascinating to consider given the odd juncture we experience with each.

The Change of Live Music Experience

In recent years, live music participation has evolved into more than a communal experience but a competitive sport. Live organizations appropriately highlight that stadium attendance has “increased threefold year-over-year”, and festivals sell out quicker than before. Merely acquiring tickets now needs detailed strategy, quick decision-making and deep finances (or a high spending capacity). Even if you’re successful, it isn't sufficient to just show up and watch the performance. There’s now an anticipation, particularly with pop fans, that you might enhance your experience quality by seeing several shows (even travelling internationally), swotting up on the set list in advance and knowing your marks to follow and audience interactions established by previous crowds.

Many attendees report feeling shaken by their participation at major tours: what seemed like a choreographed performance of massive crowds, where some individuals came unfamiliar with the protocol. The extended event, earning massive sums, was proof of the degree to which fans will travel to feel part of a cultural moment and experience their top musician perform, though the actual music appears more and more secondary to the spectacle.

The Condition of Current Relationships

Intimacy, on the other hand – an affordable and common experience – faces dire straits. Based on modern research, nearly one in four of adults engaged sexually in an average week, while about three in ten were abstaining. Elsewhere, current statistics indicated that more than 25% of individuals said they had not intimacy a single time in the last twelve months, rising from lower numbers in previous decades. In these areas, the trend has been linked to reduced intimacy with younger generations. Contrast this with the sector expanding rapidly for stadium extravaganzas and the intense rivalry for tickets. Of course it isn't straightforward as a simple decision between one or the other – “would you rather see a major tour multiple times, or remain abstinent?” – but it’s perhaps an indication of how people see the more dependable enjoyment.

Interesting Comparisons

Relationships and gigs are more comparable than you might think. Each symbolizes the activation of a bond, a practical trial of ideas or possibility that may have developed solely in your imagination. You arrive with a basic expectation of what might happen, but hopeful of being delightfully amazed – and whether it proves good or bad relies heavily on if your enthusiasm and hopes align with others. Frequently you might find with another person's locks in your mouth, and later be waiting around for a break and a moment alone alone. Similarly for each, stimulants and beverages can potentially heighten or reduce the situation (but certainly help the most unpleasant occasions easier to weather).

Finding the Balance

The magic to live events and relationships hinges on finding that perfect combination between comfort and excitement, similarity and difference, work and relaxation. Certainly it occurs infrequently – but it's the recollection of when it worked, the knowledge that it can happen, that motivates us to give it another shot: to {
