A high-ranking Russian military figure has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.
The attack happened on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
The committee indicated that one possible explanation suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Scene of the Blast
Teams have been dispatched to the location, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.
Accounts suggest the blast occurred in a car park close to a residential building.
Pattern of Incidents
Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been attacked within Moscow.
This most recent event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a informant previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of official stance.
The conflict has been marked by shadowy operations moving into the heart of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death remains ongoing.
