McLaren Attributes Crash to Rival Drivers for Team-Mate Crash

Wheel flies off racing car after collision between team drivers

One tire detaches from the McLaren of Lando Norris after he made contact with team-mate Piastri at the opening of the US GP short race.

McLaren F1 team executives Brown and Stella blamed opposing racers for the crash between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

The Australian driver, leading Norris in the championship by 22 points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.

The crash forced out both team drivers out of the race, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.

McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Incident

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, commented to Sky Sports that some of the driving at the front was "amateur hour", stating: "Obviously Hulkenberg drove into Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the chance to compete."

"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise don't act with necessary care. Enter the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and continue."

The team indicated that the team principal was referring to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

Nevertheless, former champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he thought Piastri had not shown enough understanding of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

Piastri had a stronger launch than the Briton and at first challenged on the outside on the uphill entry to the corner.

But he then cut back in an attempt to get a advantage on Norris on the exit, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Norris. Unfortunate."

His teammate commented: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inner side, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the middle."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."

"Oscar steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Oscar turned in and the contact was unavoidable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

McLaren will review the crash with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on Saturday.

The team principal said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now focusing on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."

"The points are the most important thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A bit more care would be good for everyone."

Championship Implications

The sprint event was taken by the Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 behind of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a very competitive car and two skilled racers. We look forward to just some normal racing."

Verstappen said he was taking the championship one event at a time.
