A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
