Puzzling Rosy Sludge on Secluded Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Fears of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in Tasmania are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a secluded beach, with certain experts concerned it could be an algal bloom.
Broad Occurrence Along Coastline
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a portion of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been documented on parts of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Gathered for Examination
Specimens have been taken and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A spokesperson remarked that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in reaction to changes in minerals, warmth, precipitation or illumination".
"These blooms are at times called red or pink tides because the outbreaks can change the water crimson," the spokesperson noted. "Only some phytoplankton events are harmful, with many species functioning as a primary source of food for marine life in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The primary reason of crimson tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create bioluminescent light displays at night."
Growing Frequency Connected to Global Warming
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their frequency has increased in recent times, in part due to environmental shifts and pollution that join together to create mineral-filled seas geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that normally serve as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a rapid growth in their numbers that disturbs the proper operation of marine environments.
These events have been equated with marine infernos and can persist in growing as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, sensitive marine ecosystems can be devastated as marine life is killed or deprived of oxygen, supplying more minerals for the outbreak.
Past Catastrophic Outbreak in South Australia
South Australia recently dealt with a devastating algae outbreak along its southern shore after a succession of oceanic warm spells, which spread across an extensive zone. The event resulted in swimmers with irritated eyes and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to numerous aquatic species across 400 different species, according to government calculations.
Scientist Opinion on the Current Situation
Faith Coleman, who was involved in studying the onset of South Australia's outbreak commented, based on images of the Tasmanian outbreak, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been numerous of these events around the island of late," she remarked.
Coleman said sea sparkle did not produce toxins like the species involved in South Australia's severe algal bloom, but it does consume microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.
"Typically one notices a bloom of the organism after a outbreak of another organism, or for example a marine breeding," she noted.
Calls for Action and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the rosy slime in Tasmania, said it looked like the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, citing comparable events elsewhere.
"Thus the state needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the samples we've gathered and we need to inform the community here," she said.
She expressed she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a prickling feeling along her body while being splashed with contaminated seawater.
Accounts of Deceased Marine Life and Demands for Official Intervention
An environmental foundation has stated deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers appearing on the coast, with a prominent conservationist calling the circumstances as an "ecological crisis" and demanding the state premier to inspect and "assume command the effort that authorities must be making".
"He needs to know this is a crisis in the making, economically as well as ecologically."
Government Response
Talking with reporters, the leader said he was did not know of any links between the algae outbreak and the salmon industry, saying laboratory analysis was necessary before judgments could be drawn.
"We must make certain our waterways are environmentally safe and long-lasting," he said.
"Numerous shorelines across the state are our treasures and we need to ensure the people and our industry can operate side-by-side to utilize our aquatic resources efficiently and in a lasting way."
