Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Exchange
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following Denver's historic comeback win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
