The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
An new initialism came to light a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are ongoing. Authorities rejects these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
