The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
