A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
