The megacity Rises to Hazardous Pollution After Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" category.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Various sections of the capital recorded an air quality index above 500, which equals ten times the healthy limit recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding acceptable limits.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as winter begins.
However in recent months, the newly elected local administration appealed to the judicial authority to request a easing of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Court Ruling and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities approved the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city showed air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Effects
The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants originating in India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Around the festival period, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the most severe records ever recorded in Beijing, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air descends.
Medical and Economic Toll
Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause cancer.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature deaths per year in the capital.
