New research suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
