During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
